I do not know if this Navy enlistment film worked but knowing the amount of research that they did on what would attract young man, I suspect that it did work back then. I know that it wouldn't work today. This is a film from my collection of 1950s documentaries and educational films and TV commercials on more than help me to understand the time when I grew up and also comes like this help me to create my documentaries about the 1950s, 1960s, and the 1970s.

The speaker is John Steinbruner. I conducted this interview with him in 1989. His specialty was public policy and he taught public policy at MIT, Harvard, the John Kennedy school, and led the school of public policy and international security at University of Maryland. He was also a leader at the Brookings Institute and the center for international and security studies. I selected him to be interviewed because of his position which was neither left nor right during the 1960s. He died in 2015.

I have a growing relationship with my subscribers that includes asking me questions which I try to answer in videos like this one. Storytelling isn't easy. Most of you know that. The subtleties I describe in the short video will hopefully help all those who would like to create video stories, interview relatives and close friends, etc., to do more powerful interviews. But also, if you are merely a viewer, what I am saying here may help you to perceive why certain stories and storytellers affect you as they do and why others do not. I will be posting other clips from his interview, done by me in 1989, as a part of my 6 part PBS television series, Making Sense Of The Sixties. Back in the mid-sixties I did several films on the civil rights movement and the voter registration drive and found the black church totally supportive and many white churches equally supportive.

The speaker is Carl Oglesby, a noted libertarian and 1960s Vietnam war political activist. I interviewed him in 1989. He is not a baby boomer and was born during the “silent generation”. Of all of the hundreds of people who I interviewed at that time, I found him the most articulate. He was one of the original founders of the students for a Democratic Society (SDS). During his days, he was a writer and a journalist and a professor at MIT among other universities. He wrote several books, most notably one called “Who Killed JFK.” search his name on my YouTube channel to find other comments by him.

As my subscribers know, this clip is A portion of an interview I did with one of the people in my television series on the 1960s. It was made in 1989. The gentleman lived the life of an innocent young boy, a political radical, a hippie, a dropout, and more...... and now runs a successful business making guitars and other musical instruments. The speaker is Ed Sidey from Greenfield Iowa. He was a lifelong newspaperman and the editor of the Adair County Free Press (now part of the Carroll Daily Times) in Iowa. I conducted this interview with him in 1989 speaking about the 1950s and 1960s. His ancestors started the newspaper 125 years before he and his brother sold it later in their lives. I was trying to get perspective from Americans of all stripes and he felt he was painting a picture of the way most of the folks in this town felt back then.

The speaker is Steve Allen, actor, comic, writer, musician, creator of The Tonight Show and so much more. The dialogue with him was recorded in 1989. He was a prolific talent on radio, TV, composed thousands of songs, acted in movies, wrote books, was a well-known science skeptic, and the all-around good guy. He is a cofounder of the Tonight Show where he had as guests many of the most famous folks of his time including Elvis Presley and Jerry Lewis. His second marriage was to Jayne Meadows. He died in 2000 after being bumped by another car which broke three of his ribs and caused internal bleeding at 78 years old. I was fortunate to have interviewed him for my TV series on the 1960s. He knew the depression era and the 1950s and was uniquely articulate in presenting his point of view. Search his name on my YouTube channel to find other clips from his interview.

My subscribers and others have been asking me for some time to post the full film I made back in 1965–I first professional documentary–primetime television at that time. I was 22 years old. I had never really traveled outside of my home area of New England. Being with these wonderful people taken around by the extraordinary collector of talent, Bascom Lamar Lunsford, was one of the most memorable experiences of my life as a filmmaker. I know that some commentators will say that this is not bluegrass but mountain or old-time music. To me, the distinction is irrelevant. Bluegrass. Country. Mountain. Old time. The creative source is all the same. The wonderfully talented people of the Appalachian Mountains. This is not the entire film but a good part of it.
