He was an articulate witness to the changes that took place in America and especially on universities in the 1960s. He went on to study blue-collar workers at the automobile plants in Michigan and developed a concept for work he called “new work”. He also wrote the popular books “On Being Free” and “The Experience Of Values”. I interviewed him in 1989 for my TV series looking at the 1960s. I found that one of the best ways to educate my children and to (my belief) allow them to freely use the Internet with all that had to offer and learn what its dangers were, was to assign "homework" including making videos to express themselves. Back when my son was younger, he did quite a few of these video expressions. The sound lacks audio control which I apologize for. In this video you get a sense of him and why he felt he would like to be Stephen Hawking. I don't think he still feels that way..... but I haven't asked him lately.

The speaker is Carl Oglesby, a noted libertarian and 1960s Vietnam war political activist. I interviewed him in 1989. He is not a baby boomer and was born during the “silent generation”. Of all of the hundreds of people who I interviewed at that time, I found him the most articulate. He was one of the original founders of the students for a Democratic Society (SDS). During his days, he was a writer and a journalist and a professor at MIT among other universities. He wrote several books, most notably one called “Who Killed JFK.” search his name on my YouTube channel to find other comments by him.

Back 30+ years ago my team recorded this therapy session at a church in St. Louis Missouri. Young people were sharing their stories of what it was like to grow up with a dad who had come back from the Vietnam War. I felt for these kids and for the veterans who returned with PTSD and other mental and physical challenges. The names of these young people are lost in my files (destroyed in a fire). I would love to reach out to them today to hear what happened to them and to their fathers as time went on.
